Life 2 min watch

Again and again, you get up

You get up—not because you are unbroken, but because being broken is not the same as being finished.

On refusing to stay down
An original visual interpretation by Oluwa Tobiloba, inspired by Reinhold Gräf’s words to Charlotte Ritter in Babylon Berlin. Music: “Marathon” from Babylon Berlin.
01

Why this scene stayed with me

I love this scene because it does not make resilience sound beautiful. Getting up hurts. Sometimes you do not feel brave. Sometimes you want to remain exactly where life dropped you.

But staying down lets the thing that hurt you decide the ending.

02

The refusal

So you get up. Not once. Again and again. Not because you are unbroken, but because being broken is not the same as being finished.

There is a kind of defiance in continuing long enough for the thing opposing you to understand that it cannot keep you down.

Dialogue

Original German and English translation

Reinhold
Beruhige dich. Calm down.
Charlotte
Ich hab’s so verbockt, Reinhold. I messed up big time, Reinhold.
Reinhold
Ja. Yeah.
Charlotte
Ich will kein Mitleid. I don’t want sympathy.
Reinhold
Meinetwegen, aber… Whatever, but…
Charlotte
Kein Aber. No but.
Reinhold
Doch, Charlotte. Du bist eine Kämpferin. Yes, Charlotte. You’re a fighter.
Charlotte
And I knocked myself out.
Reinhold
Für unsereins gibt’s kein K.O., Charlotte. Wir sind Straßenkinder. Aufgeben ist einfach keine Wahl. There is no such thing as K.O. for the likes of us. We’re children of the street. Giving up is not an option.
Reinhold
If someone knocks you down, you have to get up again.
Reinhold
And when they knock you down again, you have to get up again, even if it hurts.
Reinhold
Du denkst: ‚Ich will liegen bleiben. You think you want to stay down. Dear God, please let me stay down, but as a child of the street, you mustn’t.
Reinhold
Weil sie dich sonst totschlagen. Because they would kill you.
Reinhold
Also stehst du auf. So you get up. Again and again you get up, until the other person realises they cannot keep you down.
Reinhold
Und dann… haust du ihn um. And then… you knock them down.
