Empty states are small product decisions
The first empty state is often the first honest conversation between a product and the person using it.
Empty does not mean nothing
A new account, a cleared inbox, and a filtered search can all look empty while asking for completely different actions. Treating them as the same state is how products end up saying “No data” when the user really needs a starting point.
A good empty state names what is missing, why it matters, and the one next action that will change the situation.
Give the user a small win
The first action should feel possible, not like homework. A clear import step, a short setup prompt, or a useful example can turn a blank canvas into evidence that the product understands what the user came to do.
That is a small interaction, but it sets the tone for every larger workflow that follows.
